Special Infrastructure Contribution

The Special Infrastructure Contribution is a financial payment made during the development process to help fund regional infrastructure.

The contribution funds 75 per cent of the roads, bus depots, open space, planning and delivery costs as well as land required for social infrastructure.  The remaining 25 per cent of these costs is funded by Government, as is the construction of social infrastructure - including emergency services and justice, education and health facilities.

This combination ensures the cost of infrastructure is shared between the broader community and those who benefit financially from development, and will allow services which are an essential part of development – such as roads – to be delivered to service population growth.

Since December 2008, the NSW Government has discounted the SIC by increasing its share of funding to 50 per cent, saving some $6,000 per average residential lot.

The Minister for Planning & Infrastructure, Brad Hazzard, recently announced he would extend the discount by a further six months to 30 June 2012. 

The Special Infrastructure Contribution is applied consistently across the Growth Areas. Contribution rates are adjusted on 1 July each year to reflect annual changes in the Sydney consumer price index.
